Cary to Develop Fishing Park in Meyer Material Gravel Pit

Michigan based LaFarge Aggregates has deeded its gravel pit on Route 31 in Cary back to the village for development of a park with fishing piers, hiking trails and picnic areas. Village officials say the facility should be open this fall. The property transfer is part of the mining company’s settlement with the village of fines imposed for failure to restore the natural contours of the pit by June 1, 2018.

Neighboring property owners have been complaining since the 2018 deadline that dust and debris blowing off the mine have created a nuisance. LaFarge reserves mining rights to materials over 200 feet below the surface. Company officers say they have no intention to resume mining, and the reservation of those exclusive rights is merely to protect against any village interest in permitting a competitor to resume gravel mining on the property.
