State Representative Michael Zalewski’s HB 391 proposes funding $2.44 billion in capital spending on roads, bridges, mass transit and other transportation infrastructure repair, maintenance and new construction by increasing the gasoline tax from 19 cents per gallon to 44 cents per gallon, and diesel fuel from 21.5 cents per gallon to 52 cents per gallon. Other fee increases proposed in the bill would raise auto registration fees for passenger cars from $98 per year to $148 per year, doubling driver license fees to $60.00, and raising the electric car registration fee from $17.50 per year to $1,000.00 per year.

An identical proposal will be introduced by State Senator Martin Sandoval. HB 391 is expected to come to the House floor from the Revenue and Finance Committee on May 20.
