Studio Gang, headed by Belleville born and Chicago based architect Jeanne Gang, was selected yesterday to provide the architectural services for O’Hare Terminal Two’s $1.6 billion replacement facility to serve United and American airline arrivals, representing about 80% of total O’Hare passenger traffic. Ms. Gang has already put her stamp on Chicago’s skyline beginning with her design ten years ago of the 82 story mixed use Aqua Tower at 225 North Columbus Drive, and continuing with her design of the 93 story undulating Vista Tower under construction at 345 East Wacker Drive.
Shunning the traditional airport terminal architecture of rectangular boxes framed by steel columns and beams, Gang’s proposed design for Terminal Two includes flowing curves of wooden roof trusses soaring high above the heads of airline passengers and airline workers. Gang’s selection makes her the first female architect to win a major U. S. airport terminal design competition.
